1891’de St. Petersburg’da doğan Alexander Rodchenko, 1911-1914 arasında Kazan Sanat Okulu’nda okudu. 1916’da Moskova’da avangard sergilere katıldı. 1917’de Sanatçılar Birliği’ni örgütleyenlerden biri oldu. 1918-1922 arasında, Müzeler Dairesi’nin başı ve Sanat Üniversiteleri Birliği’nin bir üyesi olarak, Halk Eğitimi İçin Komisyon’un güzel sanatlar bölümünde çalıştı. 1920-1924 arasında Sanatsal Kültür Enstitüsü üyesi olarak faaliyet gösterdi. 1920-1930 arasında Tiyatro ve Güzel Sanatlar Yüksek Atölyesi’nde öğretim üyeliği yaptı. 1922’den itibaren Metal İşçiliği Fakültesi’nde dekan olarak hizmet verdi. 1923’ten itibaren, edebiyat ve sanat grubu LEF’in üyesi oldu; “LEF” ve “New LEF” dergileri için kapak tasarımları yaptı. 1924’te fotoğraf çekmeye başladı. 1926-1928 arasında sinema sektöründe çalıştı. 1929-1930’da “October” (Ekim) grubunun fotoğraf bölümünün kurucularından biri oldu. 1930’da Poligrafi Enstitüsü’nde fotoğraf üzerine dersler verdi. 1932’de “Izogi” için fotoğraf muhabirliği yaptı ve Moskova manzaraları üzerine bir dizi yayımladı. 1933’te Belomor-Baltık Kanalı’nın kurulumunda fotoğraf muhabirliği yaptı. 1933-1940 arasında “Özbekistan’ın 10 yılı”, “Yeniden Yapılanan Moskova”, “İlk Süvari”, “Kızıl Ordu”, “Sovyet Havacılığı” gibi fotoğraf albümlerini tasarladı. 1935’te “Sovyet Fotoğrafının Ustaları” sergisinde sanatçı ve katılımcı olarak yer aldı. 1935-1941 arasında Kızıl Meydan’daki spor gösterileri, tiyatro ve sirk üzerine bir belgesel dizisi oluşturdu. 1941-1942’de emekli oldu; Ocherskaya Stüdyosu’nda propaganda afişleri hazırladı. 1943-1950 arasında “Moskova’dan Stalingrad’a”, “Kazakistan’ın 25 Yılı”, “V.I. Lenin Müzesi”, “İşçi Fonlarının 5 Yılı” ve “Moskova” fotoğraf albümlerinin tasarımını yaptı. 1954’te, 1951’de ihraç edilmiş olduğu Moskova Sovyet Sanatçılar Dairesi’ndeki üyeliğine geri getirildi. 1956’da öldü.

1929 designed the plays “Klop” at the Meyerhold Theatre and "Inga" at the Theatre of the Revolution.

1930 lectures on photography at the Institute of Polygraphy.

1932 photo-correspondent for “Izogi,” where he published a series of views of Moscow.

1933 photo-correspondent for the construction of the Belomor-Baltic Canal. The photographs were used in the magazine “USSR under Construction” and the album “Belomorstroi.”

1933-1940 Together with V. Stepanova, he designed 20 editions of the magazine “USSR Under Construction,” the photo-album “10 Years of Uzbekistan,” “Moscow Rebuilt,” “The First Cavalry,” “Red Army,” “Soviet Aviation,” etc.

1935 artist and participant in "Masters of Soviet Photography" exhibition.

1935-1941 created a documentary series on the sports parade on Red Square, the theatre, and the circus.

1941-1942 evacuated; work in the Ocherskaya Studio for agit-posters.
